Let’s be honest about golf holidays. The golf is important, but the social aspect—the banter, the food and the drinks—is just as vital. The «19th Hole» (the clubhouse bar) is where the day’s winners are celebrated and the losers buy the rounds.

In the UK or Ireland, you might have a designated driver system. But whilst on holiday on the Costa del Sol, No one wants to be the designated driver. Everyone wants to enjoy a cold beer or a glass of Rioja after four hours in the sun.

Strict Spanish Traffic Laws

Spain has very strict drink-driving laws (a limit of 0.5 g/l, and even lower for professional drivers). Police checkpoints (Control de Alcoholemia) are common at the roundabouts leading out of popular golf resorts such as La Cala or Nueva Andalucía, particularly in the afternoons.

Risking a hire car and your driving licence is simply not worth it. The cost of a fine – or, worse still, an accident – far outweighs the cost of professional transport.
